The Butaro Cancer Center of Excellence is the first comprehensive cancer center in East Africa, designed to deliver a full spectrum of oncology services in a setting that prioritizes both clinical efficacy and patient dignity.

The global burden of noncommunicable diseases—such as cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular and lung conditions—is rising most rapidly in low- and middle-income countries. In Rwanda, this burden is especially visible in cancer care, with more than 3,000 cases diagnosed between 2007 and 2011. Although developing countries account for nearly 80% of the global cancer burden, they receive just 5% of global health spending.
