For fifteen years, The Butaro Hospital has shown what’s possible when dignity, trauma-informed care, and design come together as a force for healing. The design of the hospital—rooted in healing, airborne infection control, and local craft—laid the foundation for MASS’s practice and helped catalyze a regional hub for health equity in rural Rwanda.

“To accompany someone is to go somewhere with him or her, to break bread together, to be present on a journey with a beginning and an end. There's an element of mystery, of openness, in accompaniment: I'll keep you company and share your fate for a while. Accompaniment is much more often about sticking with a task until it's deemed completed by the person or people being accompanied, rather than by the accompanier.”
