University of Global Health Equity
UGHE’s pedagogy and site design are grounded in a One Health approach, recognizing the interconnectedness of human, ecological, and animal health. The curriculum spans multiple health disciplines and prepares students for real-world service through a unique emphasis on experiential learning, emergency and trauma care, and community-based health systems. Classrooms are equipped for in-person, e-learning, and teleconferencing, allowing students to collaborate across borders while remaining rooted in local contexts.
The university is intentionally located adjacent to the Butaro District Hospital and the Butaro Cancer Center of Excellence, giving students daily exposure to frontline healthcare delivery. Future physicians are trained not only in clinical excellence, but also as advocates for equitable care—deepening their understanding of how to lead change within their own communities.
The UGHE housing is designed to foster stewardship and connection. Five dormitory clusters are arranged around traditional commons, and outdoor courtyards encourage spontaneous social interaction. Native, low-maintenance plant species propagated at an on-site nursery reinforce continuity with the local environment while also providing a base for a strong ecological network as the site continues to develop.
Beyond the academic core, the broader campus master plan advances One Health through integrated ecological and agricultural systems: an arboretum at the top of the site provides space for recreation and research; terraced agroforestry fields occupy the mid-slopes; and a reforestation program on the steepest terrain restores native ecology while producing timber sustainably.
In 2024, UGHE trained 42 students—70% of whom were women—from nine African countries. Many have already expressed their commitment to returning home to deliver high-quality, compassionate care in their own communities. UGHE’s first cohort is expected to graduate in 2026, marking a major milestone in the university’s mission to cultivate the next generation of doctors and health equity leaders across Africa.
