The City of Albuquerque Office of Equity and Inclusion and MASS are working together to understand ways in which we can help close the racial wealth gap in Albuquerque.
Community anecdotes and data received as part of this work both indicate that Black and Native communities in Albuquerque are at the greatest disadvantage in terms of ability to build wealth through homeownership and entrepreneurship.
The focus of the planning studies centered on the theme of “Closing the Wealth Gap in Black and Native Communities in Albuquerque.” The results of community engagement revealed a profound dissonance between official definitions of wealth and the breadth of definitions across cultures in the city.
By recentering definitions of wealth, the plan embraced more expansive recommendations for community prosperity, environmental health, and financial wellbeing.
