Justice is Beauty
MASS’s first monograph, Justice Is Beauty, celebrates our first ten years of practice by highlighting the projects, people, and partnerships that have shaped and sustained our work.
Designed to reflect our collaborative process, the monograph features essays from our collaborators, conversations between team members and partners, and richly detailed visual essays of our built work, curated by architectural photographer Iwan Baan.
Following a foreword by Chelsea Clinton, essays by co-founders Michael Murphy and Alan Ricks examine the origins of the practice and challenge the false dichotomy between justice and beauty. Dr. Paul Farmer and Dr. Agnes Binagwaho reflect on MASS’s evolution alongside the growth of Partners In Health and the advancement of healthcare delivery in rural Rwanda.
Additional contributions from Dr. Neel Shah, Dr. Jean William Pape, Fred Swaniker, Dr. Craig L. Wilkins, and Mark Lamster, along with six intimate conversations between staff and partners, offer deeper insight into the posture behind the work, the challenges of building it, and the profound relevance of architecture in our everyday lives.
Framed by the volcanic rock of Butaro District Hospital in Rwanda and the weathered steel of the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama, the publication invites readers into the heart of our mission. We are deeply grateful to the many partners, supporters, friends, and team members who have shaped our first decade and helped lay the foundation for what’s ahead.
