In 2023, MASS and partners released Rwanda’s first Embodied Carbon Toolkit—a practical resource for reducing the environmental impact of buildings and infrastructure across the country.

Globally, building construction accounts for roughly 10% of greenhouse gas emissions, much of which comes from embodied carbon—the emissions generated through material production, transportation, construction, and eventual deconstruction. This toolkit equips Rwanda’s developers, designers, policymakers, manufacturers, and researchers with the tools to integrate embodied carbon reduction strategies into every stage of the built environment.

Designed to be actively used across sectors, the toolkit aims to normalize embodied carbon reduction as standard practice in Rwanda’s construction industry. By bridging global best practices with local data and material contexts, it sets a path toward lower-carbon, more climate-resilient development—both in Rwanda and across similar settings.

The toolkit includes three key components:

  • The Guide
    A comprehensive overview that explains embodied carbon’s impact, introduces a methodology tailored to Rwanda, and outlines actionable strategies for emissions reduction. It also shares case studies, construction waste data, refrigerant impacts, and material lifecycle assessments to support decision-making.
     
  • Rwanda Embodied Carbon Calculator (RwECC)
    A context-specific spreadsheet tool that simplifies carbon calculations for building materials and processes, enabling accessible, consistent assessments for practitioners.
     
  • RwECC User Guide
    A step-by-step illustrated manual that walks users through the calculator and its functions.
